NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships to air live
- Live video link starting on Monday
TERRE HAUTE, Indiana – For the second consecutive year the NCAA will broadcast the Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country National Championships live on the CBS College Sports Network. A live web stream of the championships will also be available on www.NCAA.com.
The event, which aired live for the first time last year, will be aired live again on Monday, November 24th at 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The women’s race is schedule to begin at approximately 12:08 p.m. EST, followed by the men’s race scheduled approximately for 12:48 p.m. EST.
Thirty-one teams (18 auto, 13 at-large) and 38 individuals for each championship were selected to participate in this year’s national championships. The championships will be held at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center and hosted by Indiana State University for the fifth straight time.
“A live television broadcast, and the ability to watch the championship online for the second year in a row, is such a huge step in the sport of cross country,” said Robyne Johnson, NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championship Committee Chair. “With so many student-athletes from all over the country, it is great that their family and friends who aren’t able to attend the championship can watch them on television or online. We were very happy with the 2007 championship viewership and we are hoping even more tune in this year.”
Last year 8,531 people watched the championship online, representing the highest viewership of any NCAA championship other than men’s and women’s basketball.
CBS Sports, the broadcast rights holder for the Championship, worked in conjunction with the NCAA and the U. S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) to create a live broadcast of the championships.
“The USTFCCCA plans to continue to work with the NCAA in exploring and implementing new ideas and technologies that will enhance the championship experience for student-athletes and NCAA member institutions as well as contribute to the growth of cross country,” said USTFCCCA CEO Sam Seemes. “Last year’s live broadcast of the Division I Cross Country Championships was the first step.”
The University of Oregon is the defending men’s team champion, while Stanford University is the three-time defending champion on the women’s side.
The Oregon men and Washington women are ranked No. 1 in the latest USTFCCCA Division I Cross Country Polls heading into Monday’s championship.
