Tyson Gay Gay pulls out of Bolt-Powell showdown

4 September 2008 at 04:14 - 16 comments - link

BRUSSELS: World champion Tyson Gay has pulled out of Friday's eagerly-awaited Golden League 100m showdown with Olympic champion, and world record holder, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell, organiser Wilfried Meert said.

After training on Thursday, American Gay, who has been dogged by hamstring troubles which sabotaged his Olympic Games dream in Beijing where he failed to make the final, said he withdrew as he didn't want to risk further damage.

Gay, who had been due to face the two fastest men in the world for the first time in a 100m race, suffered his injury at the US Olympic trials in July and has yet to fully recover.

The 26-year-old now intends to focus on his preparations for defending his 100m, 200m and 4x100m titles at the 2009 world championships in Berlin.

tyson when you are up everyone wants to ride with you, when you are down everyone want to ride on you. come back when you are 100%.

Damn move!!!

Well, it is a damn move by Tyson. Look, it is now 8 weeks since he injured that hamstring, and still complaining. He says, he won't race because he does n't want to risk the injury!! This is probably every athlete's last race of the season. So, I just don't understand what Tyson is saving himself for.
On the other hand, Asafa has been through a series of injuries all season, but still comes and puts great shows.

You people are rediculous

To be honest for those of you non athletes who get on this blog and talk trash, you are revealing you ignorance and lack of knowledge about track and sports in general. As a former ACC sprinter, I know first hand about hamstring injuries. As some previously pointed out, it has been 8 weeks since Tyson's strain. If you go look up the time it usually takes to recover from such an injury, it is usually 6-8 weeks. Gay tried to come back in 5 and the only reason he thought he could is because he had some of the "best" medical staff in the world working on him. However, nature overcomes science 99% of the time. Additionally, just because he was back in 5 or 6 weeks does not mean that his hamstring will immediately regain its strength or muscle memory. That would take another week or two, placing him right in the midst of the Olympics. That is not an excuse about his performance, just a fact. If you watched him in the US trials, you would see that there is a huge difference between how he was running. The reason he pulled out now is that he's been running on an injured leg which would continue to injure it. He wouldn't be 100% and of course not a challenge to Bolt or Powell. Hate if you want to, but I HIGHLY doubt if this man is scared. If you recall two or three years ago it was healthy Asafa Powell who was ducking a Justin Gatlin and the next year he was ducking Gay until he chocked at World Championships. This was a bit long winded, but I just thought I'd throw some FACT into this heavily fictionalized speculations you all are perpetrating as the Gospel

Gay is a wussy boy!

20.2, and not healthy? Pathetic!!!

11:39, 5 September 2008 .. Posted by Anonymous
Tyson ran 20.2 a few days ago, beating some Olympic finalists in the process -- right? So, what the hell would he convince the world that he is not 100%. Running that fast is good enough to place Tyson close enough to his ultimate form. He would have just competed against these guys, and may be set another American record in the process, but not winning of course.
Then about Asafa/Gatlin duel, don't even say anything about Asafa ducking Justin. To begin with, one guy was clean and the other was ........., I won't say anything more, just make your judgment.

He is just forcused on the Future,

i dont think Tyson is scared, he is planning for the future, life after this season. well pipo are saying this is the last meet of the season, whatever it is, its not the last race of his life. he plans to run again next year and the years to come. pipo just like saying whatever comes to their mouth without thinking first. i know Asafa and Boit are in good form, but remember gay was in good form too before an injury, i am very sure he would have faced them, though i dont know who would have won, but it would be tough. So stop saying staff with no experience, and u should remember pipo are different, so we recover different, that why pipo can suffer from the same disease and some die and some dont.!!!! hallo

As an avid track and field fan, I have seen many athletes suffer hamstring injuries. For the most part it can take up to 8-12 months to fully heal. Preparing for the future makes more sense than risking everything for one race.

Yeah most of you guy's slammin tyson sure as heck don't know a thing about track and field. There's a fine line between ready to go and recovering from a hammy. There's no way you can pass up the olympics when your not sure if your ready, however this is the end of the year, Bolt is hot right now, fold em up, rehab, and come back strong next year. If he get's out there now and gets put in a position where he reaches for overdrive and it's not there he could rip the hammy up permantly and for who, for what!

Tyson played a mind game

Yes, Tyson needed to pull out and get some time off. Not the way these Jamaicans are running. I bet a healthy Tyson would n't match Usain for sure. May be next year in Berlin, but still Usain is such a talented sprinter who can make the most mistakes (poor starts) and still make up ground on other guys in the race then win. Notice how much ground he had to make against Tyson in NY, against Asafa last night in Brussels, against other runners in the Olympic final in Beijing? This guy is just another OMEN for US sprinters and the world at large.

Coward?

Have you ever pulled a Hamstring Idiot? It sucks, they tell you it will only be 2 weeks, but Mines lasted 2 moths. You could feel the muscle tear im my leg. and even after it healed, for a moth after I was Cautious about running on it, I wasnt running sub 10 100m dashes, each step he takes is 750 lbs of force on the track. That hurts healthy legs.
