Dibaba to challenge 5000m record on Sunday

4 September 2008 at 10:53 - 0 comments - link

Ethiopia’s Olympic hero Tirunesh Dibaba will take on her own world 5000m record in the Italian town of Rieti on Sunday, reports Spikesmag.com

A spokesman for her agent said, "It will be a serious attempt at improving the time she ran in Oslo earlier this year. Rieti is a wonderful place for mid and long distance running. Many world records have been set there."

Dibaba's current mark stands at 14:11.15.

Dibaba has also confirmed ambitious plans to repeat her monumental 5000m and 10,000m Olympic double at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin next year.

“I hope to attempt it,” said Dibaba, who was the first female athlete to achieve the feat at an Olympic Games.

Dibaba hopes to squeeze her wedding to fiancé and Ethiopian Olympic silver medallist Sileshi Sihine into an intensive schedule, too.

“We haven't settled on the month or date yet, but we're thinking some time next year,” said Dibaba, referring to the Ethiopian calendar, which marks the new year each September.

Dibaba already has one World Championship double under her belt, at Helsinki in 2005.
