Interviews : Nickeshia Anderson of Kansas

by Philip Green (2/29/08)

Trackshark.com Anderson has established herself as a favorite for the 200m title (Errol Anderson)

1. Great work to a world-leading time in the women's indoor 200 meters at 22.94 seconds at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Have you been waiting for this moment to happen?

Yes, I have been for a long time, I felt it was time for me to put in the result because I have been working hard.

2. After running for two very successful seasons in the NAIA at a small university in Missouri, what have been some of the big "behind-the-scene" changes for you coming to a much larger program at Kansas?

Missouri Baptist is a great school, but it didn't have the structure, for track, that KU has. They have everything that I need, but Missouri Baptist gave me the first opportunity to shine.

3. Setting indoor meet and school records in a short period of time seem tangential to what you're doing on the oval, what are your individual and team season goals?

That I continue to improve as the season rolls on...because I am stronger now, and I will keep building on [the season].

4. You bring a quiet air of confidence to each race – what is going through your thoughts to each race?

Aggressiveness out of the blocks at all times. It doesn't matter which race it is.

5. Are you still just as adamant against running the quarter-mile sprint (at Missouri Baptist University) before you came to run as a Jayhawk? On a scale of 1-to-10, is it going to happen?

It is going to happen because it builds me up for my 200. I think that whether it is the 60,200, or the 400, I am going to do my best without backing down.

6. Would you ever consider running the "sticks," the hurdles?

No, I'm too short. Now I would have to say that it is one of the races I wouldn't consider doing.

7. Your family plays a big role in your life. What have they taught you that you carry with you to each race?

My mom always says 'when the Lord is in the vessel, He will smile at the storms.' and every time something is not going so great or if it is, I always remember that. I Love My Mom.

8. Do your teammates and coaches have any nicknames for you (like Mach-22)?

No, they just think I'm crazy and they say I don't smile enough.

9. What does your coach think of your performances so far?

Coach Brewer gets so excited and scared at the same time because she knows what I am capable of doing.

10. What is the atmosphere like on the women's team?

We are warm to each other and every one makes you feel comfortable. We are very much approachable.

11. There was an extra week without competition prior to your conference championships, how do you feel about getting prepared for the Big 12 Championships?

Having a week off from competition helps me relax a lot and get prepared for the task ahead. I have met the majority of my competition already for the past two to three weeks leading up to this time. I replay my races all the time in my head before a big track meet. And that's what I have been doing for this past week.

12. You ran as a junior national athlete for Jamaica, are you going to pursue track and field onto the world stage at some point?

I have no idea because I don't know what the future holds. But if it is God's will then it will be done.

13. As you peak for the Big 12 Championships, how has your coach tailored your training to anticipate that two-day competition?

Coach Brewer has walked all of us set by set through the competition getting us prepared. It is up to us to put our plan in action.

14. Do you have a favorite food that you have only found in Kansas? I bet the barbecue is pretty good!

I like the steaks, that's all. I normally prepare my own food. My roommate who is also a track athlete from Jamaica, Maresia Pencil, takes turns with me in cooking.

15. What's your biggest technical focus now training for the Big 12 Championships?

Just give it all I got from start to finish. I enjoyed myself while doing so. I plan on having fun at the Big 12 Championships because track is not nice to me unless I am having fun.

16. After your stellar 200 meter race, you were quoted as saying you were surprised: "I didn't know I had run that fast until I got to the finish line." Should we expect to see anymore surprises at the Big 12 Championships?

Well we will have to wait and see. I hate to count my chickens before they hatch.

17. If you listen to music to get you pumped up, then what's in your iPod?

I don't normally listen to music to get me pumped up because I am already pumped from the beginning. If I do, I normally listen to Reggae music. I am not easily distracted. I am a focused person when it comes down to business.

18. What are you majoring in at Kansas? What are you hoping to do with that degree once you graduate?

My major is Early Childhood Education, I plan to work with children after I finish. Mostly the ones that are suffering from autism.
