College Station Combined Events
Texas A&M hosted the College
Station Combined Events on Thursday and Friday which featured
plenty of top multi-event action. In the women's heptathlon, Amber
Miller of Angelo State was the top collegian with her score of 5384.
Miller's throw of 174-08 in the javelin propelled her as the top
collegian. Ashley Selig of Nebraska was third overall with 5180.
Stephen Harris of Tennessee broke the 8,000 point barrier while
winning the decathlon and meeting the NCAA automatic qualifier.
Harris leaped 25-01.75 in the long jump, 7-00.25 in the high jump
and ran 14.53 in the 110m hurdles.
Harris won four of the 10 decathlon events to push his lifetime-best
score to 8,103, the second-best regular season score ever by a Vol
behind only Tom Pappas' NCAA record score of 8,463. Harris' 8,103
tally stands as the fourth-best Vol score overall. Harris, the SEC
pentathlon champion, got the meet off to a blazing start with a
4,379 score after the first five events, the second-best in Vol
history.
Florida State Relays
Candice Scott of Florida showed she was definitely coming off her
redshirt indoor season ready to compete, popping a personal best
of 220-3 in the hammer throw at the Florida
State Relays. The mark missed the collegiate record by three
inches. 2003 NCAA Weight Champ and teammate Erin Gilreath took second
with a personal best of of 196-8. In the women's high jump, NCAA
indoor runner-up, Alex Church of Kent State took home the victory
with a short approach by clearing 6-00.75.
The Tennessee men's DMR outdueled Michigan in a good race. Returning
from an injury-induced indoor redshirt season, Marc Sylvester looked
more than capable leading off and opening up a lead on the 1,200m
leg by leading the Vols to a victory with a 9:54.18 clocking. Teammate
Jonathan Wade got things going in the 200 meters with his 20.79
victory.
After running 2:03.89 in the men's 800 meter race last weekend
at the Snowbird
Invitational, Laura Gerber of Florida State won the 400 meters
with her time of 52.67. Maarten van den Heuvel of Florida State
won the men's 1500 meter run with his time of 3:46.93.
Alabama Relays
The four-day events at the
Alabama Relays kicked off with the decathlon and heptathlon.
Josie Hahn of Vanderbilt hit the provisional mark in the heptathlon
with her winning score of 5143 points. The open events included
Rosemary Okafor of Middle Tennessee State winning the 400 meters
with her time of 52.77. Action will conclude on Sunday. Cedric Norman
of Southern Mississippi opened his outdoor campaign with a clearance
of 7-03.25 while winning the high jump. Stacy Andrews of Mississippi
claimed the discus with his mark of 181-07.
Clemson Relays
Although the Clemson
Relays was dominated with high school action, there was several
collegiate events as well. Georgia took control of the men's hammer
throw which saw Lucias MacKay win with his toss of 218'11.00".
MacKay is the National junior college record holder in the event
set at Moorpark College last season. Teammate Panagiotis Mavraganis,
who finished fourth in the event last year at the NCAA Outdoor Championships,
was second with his mark of 208'05.00". Another Bulldog, Trevor
Snyder, who placed 14th overall last season in the javelin, already
opened up this year with an impressive early season mark of 237-02.
Snyder placed second at the 2001 Canadian Championships.
Dr. Pepper Invitational
Baylor was host to the annual Dr.
Pepper Invitational on Saturday. In the men's 400 meters, Brandon
Simpson of TCU ran 45.86 to win the event. Simpson joins the TCU
sprint corps this season after spending his first two collegiate
campaigns at George Mason University, where he set a personal best
of 45.12 in the event.
Sacramento State Collegiate Challenge
Hornet Stadium, home of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, hosted the
Sacramento
State Collegiate Challenge on Saturday. Spring Harris of USC
won the women's high jump with her leap of 6-00.50. Emily Prestwich
of Utah State ran an solid opening season time of 4:19.75 in the
1500 meters. Nevada claimed the women's title with their score of
196.50 while host Sacramento State won the men's title with 167.

Hurricane Invitational
One of only two home meets this season, Miami hosted the Hurricane
Invitational. Some of the highlights included Janet Crawford
of Kentucky opening up her outdoor season with a victory in the
high jump while clearing 5-10.75. In the men's high jump, Anthony
Butler of Rutgers took the event while he cleared 7-01. Tim Adrian
of Syracuse won the discus with his mark of 175-03 and after coming
off a redshirt indoor season, Sam Segon of Rutgers was second in
173-01. Charlette Griggs of Miami impressed the rest of the field
with her time of 23.19 in the 200 meters while also taking the title.
Teammate Sashanie Simpson was second with her clocking of 23.69.
Baldy Castillo Invitational
Arizona State is hosting the Baldy
Castillo Invitational with action kicking off on Friday. Opening
day marks included Sean Furey of Dartmouth won the javelin throw
with his toss of 225-05. Saturday's action saw the Notre Dame women
win the 4x100 meter relay with their time of 44.73. Arizona State
was a close second in 44.74. Jason Barton won the 400 meters for
Arizona State while coming through in 46 seconds flat. Sean Furey
of Dartmouth claimed the javelin throw with his mark of 225-05.
The men's shot put belonged to Karl Erickson of Minnesota with his
toss of 63-07.75.
Cal-State Northridge Invitational
A the Cal-State
Northridge Invitational, Julianna Tudja of USC put her mark
on the map with her launch of 208-07 in the hammer throw. NCAA defending
champion Chaniqua Ross of UCLA took first in the discus with her
mark of 183-07. Ross then came back to win the shot put as well
with her toss of 54-09.25. Lai Lai Crawford of USC was second in
54-06.50.
Charlotte 49er Classic
North Carolina freshman Karen Wyzykowski set a new American Junior
Record in the javelin this weekend at the Charlotte
49er Classic. Her throw of 176-8 broke the previous record by
2 feet, 2 inches and was a personal record by more than 35 feet.
Quaker Invitational
At the Quaker
Invitational, Brian Chaput won the javelin with his big opening
season mark of 242-09.
SEC Quad Invitational
Mississippi State hosted the SEC
Quad which included LSU, Arkansas and Alabama. Highlights from
the meet included Tiffany McWilliams of Mississippi State winning
the 1500 meters in 4:18.52. Her time would have met the automatic
standard in the event last season and obviously meets the regional
qualifying stanrdard. Her teammate on the men's side, Glen McFadden,
was a double winner in the 100 and 200 meters while posting a time
of 20.89 in the 200.
Willie Williams Classic
The Arizona Wildcats played host to the Willie
Williams Classic on Friday and Saturday. Sean Shields threw
182-00 in the discus for the host Wildcats to place as the top collegian.
Shields placed second in the discus at the US Junior Championships
and holds the World Junior Record of 66 feet, 10 ½ inches
in the shot put. His teammate on the women's side, Connie Jerez,
won the pole vault with her clearance of 13-05.25.
