E-8 Men Rankings - Week 4

April 15, 2008 at 3:36 PM - 7 comments - link
Here are the rankings for Week 4 for Division I Men. This weekend was crazy in terms of big performances and marks. We worked alot of hours this week figuring out who was deserving of the top spots but probably ended up overlooking somebody. Let us know your comments and opinions. We listen and take them into consideration every week.

Here were some of this week's big movers:
  • Jordan Boase of Washington blew up in the 400m with a 44.82 and is now ranked 2nd after not being ranked last week.
  • Julian Reed of Texas A&M went 54' 03.75" in the triple and took over the top spot in the rankings and in our opinion is now the guy to beat come nationals.
  • Zuheir Sharif of Texas A&M went 53' 10.25" at the same meet with a -1.1w and is now ranked 2nd in the tripple jump.
  • Matt Turner of ASU returns to the long jump rankings after a 2 week absence. He jumped 26' 00.75" and moved into 2nd.
  • After a mishap last week with Jacob Korir, we have him back where we think he belongs at #1 in the 5000m and #2 in the 10000m

400m rankings

Boase is an unknown to most outside Pac 10...was a slightly better than average 200m runner first two years at UW, and a valuable piece of their successful 4x400 relay teams. If you watched his finish in this yr's NCAA Indoor Chmpshps it was apparent he had something left in tank. He's still learning how to run 400 - he's only run 4 of them since 2006 Indoor season. I would have him closer to 5-7 spot till he shows the sub-45 wasn't an abberation. Larry's still the MAN in the 400.

Boase

Good points. We will be anxious to see more of his races over the next 3-4 weeks and how he does.

These are bad

1. no one can double in the 1500/5000 or 5000/10000 and if they do they won't finish in the top 8 in both. (Unless it is McDougal)
2. What about some love for Emmanuel Bor who has run 13:45 (4th fastest time in the country) and 3:42 (3rd fastest time in the country) or Lee Emmanuel who just ran 3:40, how could you think he wouldn't score.
3. Look at the schedule next time before you rank people. I didn't mind you messing up the first week, but this is getting bad

Thanks for the criticism. My replies:

To 1 and 3: I still haven't seen a schedule. Do you know where I can find one online? I've looked at the NCAA and Drake sites and can find nothing. I sent an e-mail requesting a sked to the NCAA; if I get it, I certainly will factor it into future rankings.

To point number 2: I agree with you on Bor. I am only one of the people who does the distance rankings, so I can't speak to why my colleagues did not include him, but I ranked him third in the 1500 and fifth in the 5K. (Obviously, that does not account for your scheduling concerns.)

And adding to the schedule frustration

1. Tom Borish at trackshark just told me that "They have not been released yet. It will be up on our ncaa coverage page as soon as its released."

2. My e-mail requesting to the NCAA just bounced back with a "no such user" message.

Ain't bureaucracy fun?

Lee Emmanuel

Oh, and I agree on Lee Emmanuel as well. I ranked him number 2 in the 1500.

Sorry to make so many posts, but I keep remembering things to add, and here is another: Please remember that if you're curious about my picks and want to contrast them with the actual rankings, click on my blog in the right-hand column of this page. I also offer a little bit of explanatory commentary, and welcome critiques in the comments section.
