Training Sept. 1 to 7

September 8, 2008 at 12:46 PM - 7 comments - link

Monday 6:45 AM 3- w/up, strides, 88 second long stride, strides race super hilly US 10k

classic in Atlanta, 13th place, 30:33.  I’m actually quite happy with this

race K.K. ran 31:03 here last year and the guys I finished around were

all quite good, 10th placer Yoichiro Akiyama who ran 30:32, has PR’s

                              of 13:48, 28:23, 1:01:58.  Patrick Nthiwa, 11th place, 30:32, has PR’s

                              of 13:30, 1:02:26, Ernest Kimeli 12th 30:33 has run 13:18, 28:27,

                              1:01:57, 2:11, Suehiro Ishikawa, 14th, 30:46, has PR’s of 13:42 and

28:18.  The winner, Daniel KipKoech ran 29:46, so 47 seconds ahead

of me, he was 3rd at Peachtree this year in a 3 way sprint.  He beat me

that day by 4 seconds shy of 3 minutes. All this is to say that I ran very

well on a tough course.  Now most of this guys  were 1:45 to 2:30 plus

off of there 10k PR’s but most seemed to be pretty quick and or good

rhythm runners I’m a grinder so I expect to do better against these

guys  then I would on a flat course but still, if this course was costing

                              them a 1:30 to 2:30 I’d expect it cost me 1:00 to 1:30 and I’m real

happy where that puts me.  Particularly after such a **** summer. But

with heavy legs, 136 miles and 3 workouts in the 7 days before the

race, not counting two or three short hill sessions, and an average of

160 for the 3 weeks before, I’m really very happy with this race.

All the miles were hilly, up and down, the 5th was pretty much all up

and the 4th was largely down, it had a 200m climb at the start(well the

top of a bigger climb that started in the 3rd mile, and finished with a

200 or 300 m climb that would continue through the 5th.  Splits 4:47.9,

                             9:49.7(5:01.9), 14:39.3(4:49.6), 19:22.2(4:43.0), 24:42.7(5:20.5),

                             29:33(4:51).   22 min c/down tot. 12

Mid day travel home from Atlanta.

6:20PM woods 10, 1:10:26

Tuesday AM Rd. 10+ w/ Joey Dewitt, 1:07;01 tot. 10

              PM 8+ at mines falls w/ Joey, tim , sean, 58:09 tot.8

Wednesday 9AM woods 10 solo, 1:05:06 tot. 10

PM woods 7 w/ Ruben, ran mile on track to make it 8, 1:00:40, shin drills

                           after tot.8

                     XT shin  drills

Thursday 10:40 AM Hot!!, at mines falls, 4- w/up, few strides, 20k tempo on tough

                                 fig.8 loop, 1:07:22(3:22.1/5:25.2 pace), 4k splits, 13:34.6, 13:26.7,

13:18.7, 13:24.6.  HAMMY DIDN’T GO!! Let the marathon prep

                                  begin!! 4- c/down tot. 20

                           XT Myrtle and core

                           PM 25:17 w/up 10x12 second hills, 25:40 c/down  tot.8

Friday 8:30AM worked on by finn, chiro adjustment, massage, stim ect..

           10AM woods 10 w/ Ruben and Joey, 1:13:24 very easy, tot. 10

5:30PM 8+ shakeout at mines falls w/ Shannon, 1:13:52, really probably just

under 9 but rounding up is never allowed. Back fig.8 couple strides after

                          tot. 8

            XT 2mins backward fig.8 running

Saturday 1:20PM supremely  humid day, I have used the same shoes, style not pair, all

summer and not once have they sounded like a soaked sponge, the did

by 4 miles into this run today.  Not really hot just unreal humid.  22

miles, Methuen rd. and lake loop solo, 2:18:55, took a bit of water at 13

miles was supposed to finish at MP but with the humidity I was happy

to just not slow down too much tot. 22+

Sunday AM woods 10, 1:06:11, last two in 11:18, tot. 10

PM rd. and trail 8 in Hanover, NH, w/ Shannon, shakeout, couple strides after

                    tot.8+

XT rubber band routine, hip and low leg

Summary 144 miles for the week, 1 race 1 good workout, 1 set short hills, 1 medium long run. Onto specific marathon prep.  Couldn’t be happier with this week.  I had my first good race since that little 3k in May, I made it 20k on my hammy for the first time since august of last year.  Basically took huge steps forward on my two biggest problems in the same week.  I was also happy that the hammy didn’t go during the long run.  I’ll try to post a blog on my plans for the fall in terms of what specific marathon prep is and what the  main focuses will be and how things change from fundamental.  Also how I think the still existent, though quickly improving hamstring will affect things.

But real quick I’m going to aim for the ING NYC marathon.  My goal is to run at least a PR and I really feel I should be able to get into the 2:12 range.  I figure the course is about equal to the trials course in toughness/slowness level so that would be a great run.  I have two other races cow harbor 10k – goal sub 30 on there rolling course, and the ING Hartford Half marathon- not really sure on a goal on this one, I guess to compete well and run under marathon goal pace, I’m going to be pretty tired.  I’d love to run 1:03 or 1:04 but again I’ll be tired and the course is a new England course so I have to assume its not too quick.

144 miles, plus workouts and a race! how can you find the mental stamina to push yourself through this regime and stay motivated and focussed? You must be so disciplined and worn out man! Congratulations and good luck- hope you reach your target times- you certainly deserve the sucesses. You are an inspiration to other athletes to work harder.

thanks!!

thanks thats real nice of you. Its real simple though you break it down into small bits and just do the next run, its not a hundred whatever miles its the next run and have faith old emil zatopek knew what he was talking about when he said"When a person trains once, nothing happens. When a person forces himself to do a thing a hundred or a thousand times, then he certainly has developed in more ways than physical. Is it raining? That doesn't matter. Am I tired? That doesn't matter, either. Then willpower will be no problem."
Basically if you get out the door enough times it gets easier to do it the next time.

EEEK NYC!!

Nate! This is Becki Michael (Ordway's fiancee). I am so jealous that you are running NYC! haha! Best wishes out there! Im hoping to run that next year (since watching all you guys at the trials/NYC the following day, Ive been infactuated with that marathon)! We're hitting up twin cities this year, and I dont really want to run NY till im in sub 2:32 shape. Anyway, Ill be looking forward to seeing sub 2:12! Stay healthy, and here's a fave quote of mine you can run through your head on the rough runs; "What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?" ~unknown
Put it out there, and go get em!! haha! Godspeed Nate!

Now that you cut your hair you should be able to get into at least the 2:11 range.
