Better Late Then Never

March 17, 2008 at 9:41 PM - 1 comments - link
Hey Hey Hey...folks...sorry for the delayed blog. I had a long weekend. My boys ran up in New York for the Nike Scholastic Track And Field Indoor Championships....So I gotta give them a shot out. Justin Murdock placed second the 60m and third in the 200m and he also ran the lead off leg for our 4x400m relay that got second. (Justin Murdock, Matt Brinkley, Anya Oso, and Damar Smiles). Two years in a roll I've coached some All Americans:)....Great job Nigel...aka coach holder. Well anyway I just got back from today's workout.....and all I can say is "great scott". Well let's just say that Nigel dropped my times. In previous weeks I would run a 300m in 43 or 42.........Not today, he dropped those bad boys down a bit. So I get to practice, I do my warm ups and all that good stuff. And I asked him...what's today's workout...he says 1x800m under 3 minutes and 3x300m under 39 with a 5 minute recovery. I said ok....I walked to the line and I started my 800m...."have I mentioned I've never ran a 800m in practice and I've only ran one 800m in a meet to strengthen a hamstring strain years ago." So as I'm running I'm monitoring my watch like a distance runner..... at 100m Im at 18 seconds at 300m I'm at 56 seconds, at 600m I'm at 2 minutes 12 seconds and at 800m I'm at 2:40.58. 800m wasn't bad I was a little winded afterwards and my lungs were on fire due to the cool air, but other than that I was straight. Next were my 300 meters runs. Nigel says I want you to come through 14 seconds for the first 100m then 13 seconds for the second 100m and 12 seconds for the last one hundred.... So I'm walking to the line thinking to myself...Can I really run those times...Aren't those negative splits? Well anyways he says it you know "set go" And I start off...I cruise out my drive phase and I chase some runners that were doing a 600m or something for their workout....I catch up to them and cruise through the line and he says..."That's to fast...I was like huh...I wasn't running hard...He says you need to come through 14 seconds, 13 seconds and 12 seconds. I said what was my time...he says....37. I said oh.. So...I get some water to try to stretch out my time of 5 minutes...By this time, my lactic acid was buidling up in my skinny legs. "Set go" I get out slow...to reach 14 seconds, and by the time I got to the last 100m mark....my legs were feeling it....I came thru the line and he says that's better. I said what..."that felt like crap". He said you ran 39. Ladies and gentleman...just between me and you...The 37 felt easier...then the 39. And it wasn't because it was first. 39 takes more energy......because I'm running faster splits each 100m. By this time...My legs and my body were done. My head was spinning...I would walk 30 meters and then take a knee on the track...I walked like a penguin.... With all this confusion here comes Nigel...."let's go lazy boy, I don't got all day....So I do my last 300 and I'm sure, mad a fact I know I didn't hit the time...I don't even think he timed it after seeing my first 10 meters. Afterwards I did some stepovers over the hurdles and took a nice big ol nap on the high jump mat. Thanks for reading I will write another blog on Wed.

The worst workout ever. They should be used for some type of capital punishment. Keep working man.
