NCAA Men's Weight Rankings Vol. 6: Final Predictions

13 March 2008 at 11:23 - 2 comments - link
Like the women, few of the top men competed this past weekend.  This leaves me with little to change in my rankings since last week.  Egor Agafonov (Kansas) has the best mark of the season as is undefeated against tough competitiong.  He's my pick to win it.  While Jake Dunkleberger (Auburn) sits further down the rankings, he has proven to be a big meet performer.  Keep an eye on him; remember that no one considered him the favorite entering last year's NCAA outdoor championships.  Chris Rohr (Missouri) is peaking at the right time and has had two very great meets in a row.  Walter Henning (North Carolina) has also shown he can throw far despite his youth, but he has yet to beat top competition this season.  The only change in the rankings this week comes from Jake Shanklin (Wyoming).  He moved up two spots mostly due his success against some tough competition.  Feel free to post your own predictions in the comments.

1. Egor Agafonov (Kansas) (-)
2. Jake Dunkleberger (Auburn) (-)
3. Chris Rohr (Missouri) (-)
4. Walter Henning (North Carolina) (-)
5. Jake Shanklin (Wyoming) (+2)
6. Boldi Kocsor (UCLA) (-1)
7. Simon Wardhaugh (Boise State) (-1)
8. Jon Pullum (Purdue) (-)
9. Leonard Jatsek (Ohio State) (-)
10. Matt Wauters (Idaho) (-)

On the bubble (listed alphabetically): Jason Lewis (Arizona State); Jason Schutz (Colorado State).

I mainly agree with your selections, BUT, I think Chris Rohr will pull another big throw out. He is really consistent with his deep throws. I saw him at Big 12s two weeks ago, he's a strong competitor, so I wouldn't move him down just yet. Walter is young so i say 4th or 5th for him, Jake D. will pull off the 3rd place, and Jake Shanklin will either beat Henning or fall just below him. The rest is up for grabs. I have competed against a lot of these guys and I think it should be an interesting comp. But we all know Egor will win...he has the best and most consistent form out of all the throwers and he's the most disciplined thrower in NCAA i would say.

This is one event where everyone is so close, I wouldn't be surprised nothing holds to form. I think any one of the top five throwers has a realistic shot of winning. They all have great personal bests and have thrown well against each other. The rest of the field could certainly enter the mix too. For instance, I know Matt Wauters can throw something big if everything comes together. It should be exciting to watch.
