Early Results for the Weekend of 3/01/08
Chris Rohr (Missouri) backed up his strong mark from last weekend with another personal best of 22.42m (73-06.75) at the Big 12 Championships. However, that was not enough to top Egor Agafonov (Kansas) who launched a throw of 22.67m (74-04.50) in the final round to secure victory. Agafonov now leads the NCAA again. Missouri scored more team points, however, by having four of the top five finishers and a combined 23 points. Loren Groves (Kansas State) threw a personal best of 21.41m (70-03.00) to win the women's competition and outdistance Elisha Hunt (Missouri) and Laci Heller (Kansas State). Groves becomes the third woman to top 70 feet this season and sits less than an inch behind Stevi Large (Akron) on the national list.
On Thursday, Walter Henning (North Carolina) threw a new personal best of 21.66m (71-00.75) to win the ACC Championships. The women's competition was very close with Brittany Pryor (Virginia Tech) beating Khadija Talley (Miami) by less than a foot and Kristen Callan (Virginia Tech) not far behind. Stevi Large (Akron) won the MAC Championships with an excellent toss of 21.18m (69-06.00). At the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, Sarah Stevens (Arizona State) threw a season's best of 20.94m (68-08.50) to win by nearly three feet over teammates Jessica Pressley and Tai Battle. Boldi Kocsor (UCLA) easily won the men's competition and also nearly broke 70 feet.
On a side not, congrats to Russ Winger (Idaho) who threw a shot put personal best today of 21.00m (68-10.75) at the WAC Championships.
