Results for the Weekend of 2/02/08
While Brittany Riley continued to dominate the women's field with a near season best toss of 24.12m (79-01.75) at the Indiana Relays, the men's competition intensified. To start with, pre-season favorite Egor Agafonov made his season debut, but only produced the fourth best mark of the weekend despite beating some tough competition at Husker Invitational. Jake Shanklin of Wyoming stole the weekend's headlines by producing a nation leading mark at the Air Force Invitational. Shanklin, who placed twelth at last year's NCAA indoor championships, improved his personal best by nearly three feet to 21.90m (71-10.25).
Last year's NCAA outdoor champion Jake Dunkleberger was just as impressive in his season debut tossing a mark of 21.87m (71-09.00). Dunkleberger now sits second on the national list, just ahead of freshman Walter Henning. Boldi Kocsor of UCLA also picked up the weight for the first time in a few years and threw a huge personal best of 21.29m (69-10.25) to win in Seattle. Kocsor had last competed in the weight throw at the 2006 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships where he tossed 17.57m (57-07.75) as a redshirt freshman. Simon Wardhaugh also improved over the weekend.
