NCAA Championships: Prelims Results

7 June 2007 at 17:44 - 2 comments - link
The NCAA Championships got off to a slow start today with the preliminary round.  Every athlete was given three attempts with the top twelve finishers qualifying for Friday's final round.  Jenny Dahlgren automatically qualified on her first attempt, but was the only woman to do so.  Brittany Riley, the other favorite in Friday's final, struggled with a foul and a poor throw.  She found herself sitting near the bottom of her flight until she bettered 65 meters on her final attempt.  After the strongest year in collegiate women's hammer throwing history, a mere 57 meters qualified for the final.

The men's competition was no better.  Cory Martin easily hit the automatic qualifying mark on his first attempt and Nick Ownes bettered it on his second attempt.  However, they were the only two automatic qualifiers.  The final qualifying also has some interesting characteristics compared to years past: only two of the finalists are foreign-born and ten of the finalists are upperclassmen.  Also interesting is that four of the finalists (Owens, Midles, Bingisser, and Rolfe) are all graduates of high school is Western Washington.  A list of all the qualifiers and a link to the full results can be found below.

The hammer throw did start off slow for a championship competition. The overall competition was great and showed that you have to show up and throw and that your ranking alone is almost meaningless. "Remember people, the marks used for ranking are best throws." People need to pay atention to the first series of throws. Most good collegiate throwers this year do not release their best throws until finals. That trend led to them being beaten in the first round. The best throwers threw in the end.

The NCAA Championships is one of those events where you have to be there to believe how easy it is to make the finals. Every athlete in the field has thrown far enough to make the finals. Its just a matter of doping what you did to get there. If athletes focus on the rankings coming in, they will be playing too many mind games with themselves. They have to realize they don't have to set records to make the final day. Enough people fail to perform that an athlete normally needs to be just above average.
