NCAA Division III Championships

Favorite Kevin Becker (UW-La Crosse) won the men's competition, although not by the margin expected.  Becker threw his best in the first round and held the lead throughout.  However, he fouled his final four attempts.  In the final round he was given a close scare as Jake Basher (SUNY Brockport) moved into second place and within a meter of Becker's best.

The women's competition was dominated by Terri Schwamb (UW-Oshkosh).  Schwamb opened up the competition with a throw of 57.70m and improved throughout the competition.  Her final attempt of 60.36m was her best and also was isbest mark in D3 this season.  Dana Klemm (Loras College) took second.

Final Round of D3 hammer

The final round was not without excitement however. Jake Basher's throw of 59.76 originally came up as 53.XX and everyone was yelling that it wasn't right, so they redid the electronic measuring device and 59.76 came up. Kevin Becker's last throw, which was a foul, was over 66 meters, as the board showed after the competition was over.
