Fastest opener ever
Our home meet got canceled this past weekend, which turned out to be a good thing. Instead, we traveled to Cape Girardeau, MO for the meet at SEMO. Coach had me entered in the 4x100 (which I hate), the 400, and the 4x400. We took 2nd in the 4x1 after an uncharacteristic bobbled exchange between me and Chris. I was fairly conservative on the run because I have a bad habit of hurting myself on 4x1s.
Then the time for me to open up my outdoor season in the 400 came around. Traditionally, we've run here at the SEMO meet to open our outdoor season. Freshman year I ran 48.81, sophmore year 48.01, last year the weather was horrible and I ran 48.81. I hadn't been feeling too good in practice last week so I told coach that I thought I'd probably go 47.4. He seemed to think I would be faster than that, and most of the time he can tell how I'm feeling better than I can. So I decided that I'd shoot for the DII auto mark of 46.80.
I came out of the blocks well and got up to speed well in the first 110. By that time Miles was rolling past me, but that's the beauty of the outdoor 400m: everyone is in their own lane and I don't have to worry about what they're doing. I stayed relaxed on the backstretch and began to move again at 200m. I felt strong for the last 150m and finished a little behind Miles to take 2nd in the race, like I've done pretty much every year. I looked at the board and saw 46.85. It's not auto, but I'll take it.
